It was the perfect post-call day. Nothing is more satisfying than taking a long, hot shower after a 28-hour shift; to physically and mentally scrub it all away and put on my softest pajamas, knowing I have the entire day to sleep; the unparalleled physical release as I’m covered in a warm blanket and my mattress caresses me to sleep. Afterward, I wake up to a glass of red wine and a three course meal that my roommate picked up from Barbuzzo: salads, bread and hummus to start, a combo of paella and rigatoni for the entree, and budino for dessert. My belly is full for the first time in two days, and I am appreciative that we didn’t talk about my ICU shift or the ever evolving hospital policies. I almost forget I have to wake up at 5 the next morning to do it all again. Almost.
